⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5 All right, Millennial ladies....raise your hand if you practically grew up on the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants saga 🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️ I know I did! Well here’s a book for all of my ladies looking for their sisterhood fix. - Claire Gibson weaves the stories of three young women who meet providentially at West Point only one year before 9/11. From the beginning Gibson primes you for tragedy. You don’t know what or how, but you know when. The rest of the story is like watching the lives of these three women unfold in front of you as you wait for the other shoe to drop. - These women argue, they grow close, move away, become distant, return, support, grow jealous, love, suffer, succeed, fail, grieve, revive. This book is a meditation on the unique relationship between women. It characterizes the unspeakable bond we share with those we are lucky to call our friends. - It’s also definitely a tear-jerker; I sniffled through the last 100 pages of this book. Now you can’t say I didn’t warn you. - Buy this book for yourself and then circulate it amongst your sisterhood. Better yet, read it together. ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5 Finally finished this sucker. I’ve been working through this book since January, and I don’t necessarily think that is entirely the book’s fault. - Pro tip: don’t start the newest book of a 14-book series without reading the others first. I was told this would function fine as a stand-alone, but I felt like I was doing a disservice to the characters by reading it in this way. It’s hard to understand a character’s development when you’re only getting a snapshot of them at then end of their story. - Overall, however, I really enjoyed the plot of this book. It was engaging and exciting, and the ending was a shock. 👋🏻It’s been a busy couple of months and I unfortunately had to put my reading on hold (literally in the middle of several books) for a couple of months. Sometimes you have to make short term sacrifices in order to achieve long term goals and this was one of those times. . But now my time is starting to come back to me and I’m excited to get back into my books. One of these goals was to read more books that are provocative and challenging. Don’t get me wrong, I still love my lighthearted and easy reads, but as years go on I have begun to recognize the ability some books have at developing empathy, broadening horizons, bringing exposure, and posing challenges. This book is one of them. - I was drawn to the story from the beginning. What really captured me was the way in which this book illuminated topics that are touchy and uncomfortable to address for some. Etaf Rum is unapologetic in her writing, and you can hear her voice, her story, and the stories of countless women around the world seeping into the pages. - A Woman is No Man addresses topics surrounding arranged marriage (which may be considered old-fashioned in America to most, but is less so in other parts of the world), women’s choice, women’s literacy and education, domestic abuse, culture versus religion, immigrant narratives, asylum, and more. - This book challenged me, broadened my understanding, gave me an insight into a world I didn’t know existed, and left me ruminating for days.
